Growing Alabama’s Workforce Through Collaboration with Kristen Holder

Updated: Jun 2

At Tech Queen Shop, we're more than just stylish tech accessories—we’re about amplifying powerful women blazing trails in the digital space. Every month, we spotlight a standout Tech Queen on the Scene, and this month, we're thrilled to feature Kristen Holder, Executive Director at Central Six AlabamaWorks.

From her dynamic leadership style to groundbreaking tech access initiatives, Kristen is transforming the workforce landscape in Alabama—and inspiring the next generation of diverse tech talent along the way.

A Homecoming of Purpose

Kristen's return to Central Six was more than a career move—it was a full-circle moment. “I was at Central Six about three or four years ago as an industry cluster coordinator. Now, coming back as Executive Director feels like a really cool homecoming,” she shares. Her leadership now spans multiple organizations, supporting workforce development and expanding access to career opportunities across the region.

What makes Kristen’s story special is her passion for creating impact from the inside out—starting with her team. “We’ve grown from a staff of two to eleven in just 18 months,” she says with pride. “That growth represents real investment in people’s lives.”

💻 Opening Doors: Tech Connect & Equity in Tech

One of Kristen’s proudest achievements? Spearheading the B.T.C. Tech Connect, a collaborative networking initiative aimed at connecting diverse groups of young adults seeking tech industry jobs with employers. From collaborating with partners like TechBirmingham to form the Birmingham Tech Council and hosting mixers to connect employees with employers, The B.T.C. Tech Connect was born. These mixers have served over 200 attendees and are changing the narrative around who belongs in tech.

“Tech is still a space that’s predominantly white and male,” Kristen explains. “We heard directly from young people that they often don’t feel like there’s a space for them. So we created a different kind of vibe—one that feels welcoming, inclusive, and purpose-driven.”

Through the BTC Tech Connect, attendees don’t just make contacts—they get hired. Employers and job seekers connect organically, with helpful advice for job seekers, like LinkedIn training, adding extra value. “This is what happens when you listen and build something with young people, not just for them,” Kristen says.

Breaking Barriers: The Reality of Representation

As a woman in a male-dominated field, Kristen acknowledges shares a tip for people who may experience early challenges, simply "Get in the room, once you're in, people are more open than you might expect. It’s about proving the value and showing that the time to hire and promote diverse talent is now.”

Kristen’s story is proof that representation matters—not just for those in the room, but for those watching from outside, wondering if they belong.

🌐 Tech & Innovation: The Great Equalizer

To Kristen, tech and innovation aren’t just buzzwords—they’re career accelerators. “No matter what industry you’re in—healthcare, manufacturing, anything—technology is transforming how we work. If you’re not engaging with it, you’re going to get left behind,” she says.

Whether it’s digital tools for workforce training or apps that streamline job placement, Kristen is committed to using innovation to remove barriers and help professionals not only find jobs—but build sustainable, fulfilling careers.

Final Thoughts from This Month's Tech Queen

Kristen Holder reminds us that building equity in tech takes more than words—it takes intentional design, real leadership, and a whole lot of collaboration.

To all the emerging Tech Queens out there: “Get in the room. Use your voice. And don’t wait for permission to lead.”
